Vineyard News - November 2008

Harvest is over and the good news is that it turned out to be an excellent year. Those who know me know that I don’t say that about every vintage.
We were all pretty worried around the beginning of October as the forecast was not very pretty. This year the grapes were two weeks late due to a cool spring and that would put harvest dangerously close to fall rains, which can dilute the flavors and cause rot. My vines can produce around four tons per acre and normally we remove one ton per acre in August so the rest will ripen sooner and we will have more concentrated flavors. This year because of the lateness, we removed two tons per acre to insure that we could fully ripen the crop, and luckily, the forecast was wrong. The rains kept getting moved farther off and the fruit was able to extract full flavors from the vine prior to harvest.
Our newest babies are right now moving from fermenters to barrels where they will age until bottling next August. These beautiful wines will be released in late fall of 2009.
